Thermal transport properties in complex metallic alloys

Apart from the electronic structure that is most usually probed (electrical resistivity, thermopower, Hall efect, etc.) thermal conductivity can be used to get some insight into the phonon band structure and dynamics. In conventional crystals, temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity is dominated with strong umklapp maximum which position is strongly correlated with the Debye temperature and usually appears below 50 K. At higher temperatures thermal conductivity decreases and saturates. Temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of the amorphous materials, on the other hand, due to lack of periodicity and no long range order shows no umklapp maximum but some plateau instead. They have lower thermal conductivities generally and at higher temperatures their thermal conductivity further increases saturating finally at some value. Quasicrystals have no periodicity, but they possess long range order. Temperature dependence of their thermal conductivities usually show plateau or shallow maximum at intermediate temperatures, but at higher temperatures it continues to increase, and very often with no indication of saturation. Here we present thermal transport properties in several Al-based icosahedral and decagonal quasicrystals [1, 2] together with analysis proposed.
