Demographic processes on the island of Susak: emigration from the island
The paper discusses the demographic processes on the island of Susak in the past and present, and the emigration from the island of Susak in the United States, specifically in New Jersey. Time period of study was determined from the start emigration from the island to this day. The research topic is the population of the island of Susak. This paper discusses the long-term demographic processes on the island of Susak in terms of data obtained from the census. These processes are as follows: depopulation, its components (natural change and migration), the spatial aspect of depopulation and aging of the population of the island (total and by age-specific quotas). Due to unfavorable economic and political situation in the Habsburg Monarchy, many people from Susak emigrating from the island of Susak, when left without its most vital and productive population. One of the main reasons for emigration, the generally known, was the high taxes on wine, the main product of Susak. Emigrated were mainly in New Jersey called as chain migration. The study is based on the available Croatian and Anglo-Saxon literature, statistical data analysis, and data collected through the Internet.
