Fruit prunning affects the agronomic traits of tomato grown on different substrates
The aim of this research was to determine the effect of fruit pruning on agronomic traits of tomato fruits harvested from different clusters. Beefsteak tomato cultivar 'Cemile' was grown on different inert substrates (rockwool, perlite and coconut fibers) at fruit load with 3 and 5 fruits per cluster. Plant density was 1.8 plants per m2. During the harvest period fruits from sixteen clusters were harvested. At harvest, marketable fruit mass and yield per cluster were determined. Fruit mass, total marketable yield and marketable fruits share were determined for the harvest period. At different levels of fruit removal, marketable fruits harvested from different clusters weighted between 124.3 and 281.2 g, while achieved marketable yield per cluster varied from 0.287 to 1.751 kg m-2. Plants with 3 fruits per cluster achieved total marketable yield from 11.80 kg m-2 on rockwool to 12.00 kg m-2 on coconut fibers. At the same time, 5 fruits per cluster resulted with higher total marketable yield between 15.71 and 16.98 kg m-2 on perlite and cocnut fibers, respectively. Fruit mass for the harvest period was similar regarding to fruit load and growing substrate. It varied between 164.8 and 177.8 g at fruit load with 3 fruits per cluster and from 164.8 to 170.9 g at fruit load with 5 fruits per cluster. Depending on the fruit load and growing substrate, marketable fruits share ranged from 65.3 to 82.2% of potentially setted fruits. Tested cultivar developed fruits with lower mass but achieved higher yield at fruit load with five fruits per cluster. The highest marketable fruit mass and marketable yield was achieved on coconut fibers.
