The ‘Byron of Kipling’s England: Oscar Wilde in Croatia

This article deals with various paradigms of reception of Oscar Wilde in Croatia and seeks to contextualize them within a larger socio-historical, political and cultural framework. It also examines the impact of Wilde's works and his poetics on Croatian theatrical and literary circles, their reverberation in the writing of some eminent Croatian authors featuring traces of possible influence, some of them already acknowledged. The paper adopts a comparative approach and shows how the reception of Oscar Wilde in Croatia was closely interrelated with the reception of his works in other European countries, in particular Central Europe, especially in the first decades the 20th century and is still deeply engaged in an ongoing cultural dialogue and exchange. From the beginning of the twentieth century to this day, the continued presence of Oscar Wilde in Croatia is testified by the translations of all his major works, the frequent performances of his plays, critical articles and various adaptations of his works by Croatian writers. The paradigms of reception and critical debate around his life and work have however changed over time.
