OWN EXPERIENCE IN THE TREATMENT OF INSOMNIA AND PAIN IN PATIENTS WITH CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASE
Insomnia and pain are very common symptoms in l)atients treated for cerebrovascular disease. These symptoms can significantly infltiece various fields of patient's life, interfering with the ability to perform normal duties in family, at working place, and elsewhere. Therefore, it is esssential to know the basic conditions leading to insomnia and pain, their interrelations as well as the pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures that can help the patients. Insomnia sometimes occurs as part of the aging process. It may be related to some social and environmental factors. In some patients, it is a consequence of existing chronic pain. It can be a side effect of some drugs, or part of depressive disorder. Since elderly patients often take a number of various drugs at the time, their elimination being slower than in younger patients, the possibility of side effects including insomnia is certainly greater. It is a characteristic of insomnia and pain that they often show mutual exacerbation, which should be taken in considera~ tion when prescribing drugs to these patients. The authors present their own experience and therapeutic approach in treating insomnia associated with pain, with particular reference to both non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapy for these symptoms.
