ROLE OF POSTERIOR CEREBRAL ARTERY IN CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASE
Doppler (TCD) were performed. Risk factors were assessed by lipidogram, blood glucose, and presence of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. There were 20 (60.6%) men and 13 (39.4%) women aged 60-80 years. In most patients (57.6%), brain CT revealed lesions in other areas beside the one in the territory of PCA. Lesions to the right and left posterior cerebral artery were more common men (36.4%) and women (24.3%), respectively. Spinal tap showed increased protein CSF levels in 41 % of patients. Concerning the presence of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, a combination of the two was most frequently found in both sexes, however, it was a more prominent finding in men (42.4%). Carotid CDFI showed significant internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis in 19.4% and ICA occlusion in 16.1% of patients. The rest of patients had incipient or moderate stenosis of ICA. TCD showed the presence of hypoperfusion ipsilaterally to CT lesion in 56.3% of patients. This type of ischemic disease was found to have a relatively abrupt onset, accompanied by hemianopia in 45% and sudden confusion in 27.3% (n=9) of patients. In conclusion, we point to the CT-verified infarction of the superficial PCA territory as a specific cerebrovascular clinical entity.
