PROLIFERATION, DOUBLING TIME AND VIABILITY OF NEUROBLASTOMA CELLS AFTER GLOBAL SYSTEM OF MOBILE RADIOFREQUENCY RADIATION

In this study we evaluated influence of global system of mobile (GSM) modulated radiofrequency radiation on viability, doubling time and proliferation of continuous culture of neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y. Cells were exposed to global system of mobile (GSM) modulated electromagnetic field (EMF) at frequency of 915 MHz, electric field strength of 10, 20 and 30 V/m. Average specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated at 0.12, 0.8 and 1.6 W/kg. Cells were exposed for 1, 2, and 3 hours in the Gigahertz Transversal Electromagnetic Mode cell (GTEM-cell) supported by tracking generator, amplifier and modulator of the signal. Negative- and positive cell controls were included into the experiment. Trypan blue exclusion test was used to determine cell viability. Cell proliferation was determined by total cell counts during ten post exposure days. Population doubling time was calculated from cell proliferation counts. Cell viability in exposed samples remained constant during course of experiment and did not differ from the negative controls. After two and three hours of exposure for all applied field strengths, cell proliferation started to decrease on the third, fourth and fifth post-exposure day. After fifth day until tenth post-exposure day cell proliferation did not vary from negative controls. The cell population doubling time was 44 hours and did not differ between the groups. From obtained results it could be concluded that two and three hours of exposure does not affect cell viability but temporary significantly influences the cell proliferation.
