Changes in perceiving and defining organization development
Organization development (OD) is an interdisciplinary field that includes insights from various scientific and professional disciplines, such as, organizational (industrial) psychology, human resource management, communication management, sociology, etc. as well as from business practice. Many scientists tried to reach a viable and holistic framework and definition of OD. Thus in the last fifty years various definitions of organization development arose as a result of the difference in the professional interest and field of researchers involved, as well as adjusting theory to the fast changing business environment. The purpose of this paper is to show that the changing market conditions, human resource development and other factors relevant to business performance caused the supplementing and improvement of key elements of organization development, which subsequently influenced the changes in the perception of the term. The paper begins by reviewing the field of organization development from its beginnings, by analyzing its roots, definitions, and assumptions on which it is based, including the environment by which it is surrounded, and than proceed with the determination of its present state of art.
