Airborne ragweed pollen concentrations in Zagreb, Croatia 2002-2008

Croatia take place in the epicentre of Ambrosia expansion with the very high concentration of pollen find in the time of pollination. The aim of the study was to determine and compare the airborne ragweed pollen count during seven years (2002 to 2008), in the city of Zagreb according to the onset, duration of season, peak values, temperature and total annual count. The standardized aerobiological volumetric method of airborne pollen sampling by use of a Hirst sampler (used generally in other European countries), was used in the study. 14% of total annual pollen spectrum is attributable to ragweed pollen ; it is the second most abundant pollen type in atmosphere of Zagreb. The peak daily pollen concentrations were recorded at the end of August and in the first week of September. The highest total annual concentration of ragweed measured in 2004 was 9, 616 and the lowest in 2007 was 3, 012 grains/m3 air. The maximal daily ragweed pollen concentration of 883 grains/m3 air was recorded in 2003. In 2007, a decrease in pollen grain count (3, 012) with the lowest daily peak of 275 P/m3 air was recorded. In order to improve the quality of life for allergic individuals, Institute of Public Health has been performing daily airborne pollen sampling, along with designing pollen calendar and distributing educational leaflets to help recognize the plant.
