Influence of Filler Surface Pretreatment on the Mechanical Properties of Composites

The additions of inorganic fillers to the polymer affect the basic mechanical properties. The tensile strength of a filled polymer is more difficult to predict because it depends strongly on local polymer-filler interactions, as well as the other factors. The adhesives based on poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) matrix and filled with various CaCO3 fillers are supposed as a composite. The effect of the CaCO3 pretreatment with stearic acid was followed. Several equations have been proposed to quantify the influence of fillers on the mechanical strength of polymers. Theoretical and/or empirical equations based on the composite failure, that means matrix behavior, critical influence of filler and interactions between matrix and filler should be taken into account. The equations that describe the relative elongation of composites did not fit to experimental well. Existing mathematical models are checked and extended to ultimate elongation filler volume fraction dependence. The effect of CaCO3 pretreatment with stearic acid may be followed through the interactions between PVAc matrix and untreated and treated CaCO3 with stearic acid was carried out. Considering the calculated and experimentally proved coefficients the conclusion about interactions between PVAc matrix and CaCO3 inreinforced adhesive composite were drown.
