Modified natural zeolite as a promising material for in situ environmental remediation

The leachates of municipal, industrial and radioactive waste disposal frequently result in spreading of contaminants into the environment, so that its remediation is necessary. One of the methods is setting in situ permeable reactive barriers (PBRs) which bind to one or more pollutants through adsorption, ion-exchange, oxidation/reduction, or precipitation. This paper investigates the application of modified natural zeolite as a possible permeable reactive barrier on the laboratory scale. The experiments were performed in two steps. In the first step, zinc and cadmium from single metal solutions were loaded on modified natural zeolite. In the second step, the leaching of the metal-loaded zeolite was carried out in ultrapure water at the initial range pH of 3-9. The results show that metal-loaded zeolite is stable and has the ability to retain zinc and cadmium in the solid phase. The continuous pH measurements at different initial pH values show a tendency of suspension neutralization. This indicates the buffering abilities of metal-loaded zeolite, which apart from its high stability for heavy metal retention, shows its suitability for wide pH range applications. The results of these studies show that the modified natural zeolite might be used for in situ remediation of environment.
