Cognitive and linguistic analysis of humour in American Political Cartoons

The study reported in this dissertation analyzes the extent to which blending theory is equipped with the mechanisms that can explain the construction of the meaning of political cartoons. The cartoons included in the analysis are related to the current political and economic situation in the United States. The special focus is on the allusions to the elements that are only implicitly present in this type of discourse for which the application of the conceptual integration theory is particularly suitable. The paper also addresses the role of culture, irony and phraseological units in cartoons and their function in the process of conceptual integration. The present paper presents an overview and analysis of theories of humor and their connection with cognitive linguistic theories that relevant for the analysis of humorous blends. The paper also explains to which extent verbal and nonverbal language of cartoons can be explained using the mechanisms the conceptual integration theory, as well as the role of culture, irony, polysemy and phraseological units in cartoons and their function in the process of conceptual integration. Cartoons from our corpus form double scope networks and double scope networks with high asymmetry. Double scope networks have input spaces with different organizing frames. The organizing frame of the blended spaces includes parts of the organizing frames from the inputs as well as the emergent structure of its own, as a result in the blended space we have a hybrid model that does not exist in either domain. On the other hand in double-scope networks with high asymmetry the blend receives projections of organizing frame topology from both inputs, but the organizing frame of the blend is still viewed as an extension of organizing frame of only one input.
