From Individual Differences to Common Patterns in the Use of Vocabulary Learning Strategies
This study explored the idiosyncratic features of foreign language learners’ strategic approaches to vocabulary learning in Croatia by means of cluster analysis. To this aim, five variables were measured and analysed: learners’ use of three sets of vocabulary learning strategies (formal, incidental and self-initiated), learners’ interest in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) and vocabulary knowledge. 711 Croatian primary school learners of English participated in the study. Cluster analysis generated four distinct groups of learners with combinations of the five dimensions. In addition, the relationship between the use of strategies, vocabulary knowledge and learners’ interest in EFL was investigated.
