Neurosurgical treatment of stroke - to treat or not to treat?
Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability all over the world. Intracerebral hemorrhage accounts for 10-20% of all stroke cases, but is associated with the highest morbidity and mortality rates of all stroke subtypes. It is common type of stroke in younger population. In spite of all these facts, there are no literature data on optimal mode of treatment. During a six years, 13 stroke patients were operated on at the Division for neurosurgery, Slavonski Brod. Pathology consisted of intraventricular, intracerelellar and intracerebral hemorrhage. The decision on operative treatment was made on the basis of CT finding, patient clinical status, presumption for saving patient's life, improve his neurological condition and reduce the hospital stay, all these with the consent obtained from the patient's family members. All patients were operated on within 36 hours, most of them within 12 hours from the onset of hemorrhage.
