What is play in childhood and future profession of pedagogy students?

This paper presents results from a research on play from the perspectives of children and adults using the examples of personal biographies of pedagogy students. Theoretically, the research frame is the social-cultural development theory and the interpretative approach. On the sample of 35 pedagogy students the 'life story research' procedure was used. During the processing, the 'grounded theory' methodology was applied. The research results indicate that play from the perspective of childhood is fun and freedom. Fun in the context of activity and time spent with other children including pleasure, joy and happiness. Freedom in the sense of a way of spending time, choice of location, participants and the way of playing. Play from the perspective of future pedagogues is an educational tool, and freedom and fun are a supplement to learning and teaching. The observed differences in the view of play from the perspectives of childhood and adulthood confirm the existence of the phenomenon of 'social arrangement'. One of the possible explanations of the view of play as an educational tool in the perspective of future pedagogues could be an awareness of the power of the social structure and its influences on the behaviour of individuals.
