Energy security and energy policy of the European Union
Energy is vital to development, but one has to be aware of all dimensions of the energy: it is a source of environmental stress, an engine for macroeconomic growth and a precondition for fulfilling basic human needs. The geopolitics of energy is more important tna ever. Today it is obvious that economic and political power concurred energy richest countries. The European Union (EU) and the United States represent two major global energy consumers. The EU is relient on imported gas from Russia which makes Russia inevitable factor of the EU's energy policy. Volatile oil and gas prices, and nexus among energy security, climate change and nuclear energy proliferations make the issuues conducting optimal energy policy on the basis of politically, economically and environmentally sustainable energy strategy very complex. The aim of this paper is to determine the level of the energy security of the EU, as well as to analyze the development and prospects of the European energy policy.
