Real-Time Quantification of EBV DNA in different patient groups
EBV reactivation in immunosuppressed persons may cause morbidity. A commercially available molecular assay for quantitative determination of EBV DNA has linearity range from 10^2-10^6. Objective: To determine and compare the EBV DNA load in 3 different patient groups: patients with acute EBV infection (group 1), patients with HIV-1 infection (group 2) and patients after liver transplantation (group 3). Results: In group 1, EBV DNA was detected in 27 (93%) patients. The EBV DNA load ranged from 2, 230 to 1, 896000 copies per mL. In group 2, 13 (59%) patients (range 8, 400 to 43, 200 copies per mL). In group 3, EBV DNA load ranged from 9, 000 to 20, 600 copies per mL. Conclusion: EBV DNA was most frequently detected in patients with acute EBV infection showing highest levels of viremia. Almost two thirds of patients with HIV-1 infection had detectable viremia indicating viral reactivation. In less than one third of patients after liver transplantation, viremia was detected. Detection of EBV DNA in patients with immunosuppression requires cautious interpretation and follow-up.
