Overpasses subjected to blast load
Bridges are very important structures for every country’s infrastructure and because of that they are likely to become high value targets for terrorist attacks. Damage or destruction of key bridges may cause an interruption of transportation communication between regions which can have disastrous consequences for economy and citizens of that region. There are several ways for placing an explosive device on or in near proximity of the bridge but the investigation is focused on driven explosive device under the bridge. Two types of overpasses are investigated, overpass with massive abutment and overpass with skew embankment. Since the experiments are dangerous and expensive, the problem is investigated using numerical simulations by hydrocode software Autodyn. Preliminary simulations with different mesh sizes of surrounding air were conducted in order to obtain optimal mesh size. The models of overpasses were assumed rigid and in this stage only the blast wave propagation was analysed.
