Croatian digital initiatives
Our wish in the Newsletter is to present heritage digitalisation projects and strategies in individual countries. We invite members of CIDOC as well as non-members to contribute by presenting the leading projects in their own countries. In this number we shall present digital initiatives in Croatia, with particular reference to the museum community. Digitalisation of the cultural heritage has been identified in Croatia as an important segment of cultural policy and the cultural development of the country. Croatia has 19 state archives, more than 2000 libraries, 200 museums and private museum collections. The possibility and sustainability of digital development lies in nationally coordinated digitalisation initiatives and projects. One long-term strategic objective of Croatian cultural policy is the creation of high-quality, significant and usable digital content collections according to priorities and established standards. For this reason in 2005 the Ministry of Culture launched its national programme for the digitalisation of archive, library and museum material, and appointed a working group for the elaboration of the programme.
