Role of the Danube and its Inundation Area for Wintering Anseriformes in Croatia

The paper discusses the wintering ornithofauna of Anseriformes on the Danube and its inundation area in Croatia. The data have been collected during a five-year mid-winter waterfowl count, from January 1987 to January 1991 and in January 1999 and 2000. During the Homeland War, from 1991 to 1998, no count was taken, for this region was inaccessible to us. Registered are 18 Anseriformes species out of a total of 25 species that have contemporaneously wintered in Croatia as a whole. In the Danube region the highest numbers and most frequent occurence were recorded for the wintering populations of Anas platyrhynchos, Anser fabalis, Anas crecca and Anser albifrons dominate due to their numerousness and appearance frequency. The Danube and its inundation area are the most important wintering sites for Anser fabalis, Anser albifrons, Mergus albellus, Mergus merganser, Anas crecca, Anser anser, Anas platyrhynchos and Bucephala clangula in the whole of Croatia, for between 49 and 95% of their average winter populations from the whole of Croatia winter in the Danube region. A rare species - Clangula hyemalis - was also recorded here. The average of 39,976 individuals of ducks, geese and swans annually winters on the Danube and in its inundation area, comprising 68.5% of the annual winter average for the whole in Croatia, amounting up to 58,329 individuals. Due to its international importance for the wintering waterfowl, it is necessary to continuously protect the Danube and its inundation area from any disturbance, especially waterfowl hunting.
