Floods in Croatia - Societal and economic impacts and responses in the newspapers
The greatest part of the last 30-years losses due to natural hazards in Croatia has been connected to the meteorological and hydrological events. The relationship between different natural hazards in particular years during the long-term period is very variable concerning frequency of appearance and damage magnitude. Spacious mountainous areas with high precipitation, wide valleys of lowland watercourses, major cities and valuable assets in potentially threatened areas and insufficiently constructed and maintained protection systems make Croatia very vulnerable to floods. It is estimated that floods endanger over 15% of national inland territory. About 9% of the total damage is caused by floods. Flood damage and its share in GDP in Croatia during the last thirty years (1981-2010) show two picks, in 1989 and 2010. The database of the press articles concerning meteorological and hydrological hazards that are available at DHMZ refers to the period 2000-2010. The recorded flood events are analysed for their frequency during the 11-year period, throughout the year on monthly level and across the Croatian counties. The flood events are classified into three groups according to their impacts. The statistic of the proclaimed natural disaster events is presented.
