Emancipation and Gender Equality in the Croatian Context

The first part of this article explores the discrepancies between equality proclaimed by law and its implementation, focussing on the question of how emancipation is occurring on the macro and the micro level. After discussion of how the social context has created differences between proclaimed and actual emancipation in Croatia, the article presents the results of a study done by Target agency in October and November 2005 on the initiative of the Franciscan Institute for the Culture of Peace in which respondents were asked to express their opinions about emancipation and equality. The answers offer an indication of opinions of Croatian citizens about the actual level of emancipation and equality in Croatia and how important they think these issues are for the future development of society. They were asked not only about the situation in the workplace, but also their understanding of the value of emancipation for society and their view of gender appropriate tasks in the household. The article explores the relationship between these difference sets of responses and their implications for the future development of emancipation and equality. The article also discusses results relating to gender socialization and changes of social concepts of manhood and womanhood. The second part of the article offers a brief consideration of gender equality within the Church of Croatia based on the data analysis of a Franciscan Institute for the Culture of Peace survey.
