Impact of monetary policy on the banking system in Croatia
The Croatian financial system is characterized by the domination of banks. Banks are the most important financial institutions and bank credits are the most common type of external financing. Although their influence declined in the last 10 years because of rapid development of non-deposit financial institutions, banks are still the leading institutions in the Croatian financial system. Monetary policy in Croatia has been successful in reducing inflation by using the exchange rate as the nominal anchor. The primary objective of the Croatian National Bank is to preserve price stability. During the crisis, the Croatian National Bank helped the banking system in a way that it had several times reduced the reserve requirement rate and the minimum rate of foreign currency. Given the important role of the banking system in Croatia during the current financial crisis, this paper examines the efforts of the Croatian National Bank to deal with problems of reduced liquidity.
