The Influence of Central European Movie Producers on American Film Direction
The article focuses on the Vienna-born film directors and producers who have emigrated to Hollywood and greatly influenced the development of the classical Hollywood narrative and stylistic practices – Josef von Sternberg, Otto Preminger, Fred Zinnemann, Billy Wilder and Fritz Lang. While also discussing Preminger, Zinnemann and Wilder, a special attention is paid to von Sternberg and Lang. Von Sterberg's elaborate baroque style was essential in creating the phenomenon of the femme fatale, while Lang's works were prototypical examples of expressionistic influences on the film noir cycle.
