Flame retardancy of cationized cotton
Cellulose textiles are the most flammable materials. On the other hand, the usefulness of cotton and its blends it is the most commonly used textile material in the design and production of protective textiles. Since cotton is readily ignited and burns rapidly, it is very important to protect cotton fabric against the flame. In this paper the flame retardancy of cotton cationized before, during and after mercerization process was researched. Although this modification is usually carried out for better adsorption of anionic auxiliaries and dyestuffs, the presence of nitrogen and chlorine in short chain cationic compound for cationization improves cotton flame retardancy as well. Burning behavior of vertically oriented fabric according to ISO 6940:2004 and Limiting Oxygen Index, LOI according to ISO 4589:1996 of cationized cotton were studied. For better understanding the changes in cotton structure under the heat conditions thermogravimetric method (TGA) was used.
