Monitoring the number of Lactobacillus spp. in chickens fed with Agaricus bisporus

Enteric infectious diseases are the most common cause of loss in intensive production of chickens. Antibiotics (AGP) have been added to chicken food for many years to prevent such diseases as well as to promote their growth. Today, when non-clinic use of AGP is slowly abandoned, there is an intensive search for alternative strategies directed towards control and prevention of losses in poultry. These strategies include numerous biological and synthetic compounds that could decrease the negative effects of stress and protect poultry from infection. It is already known that mushrooms have numerous biologically active compounds (such as β-glucans) with definite antibacterial, antiviral, antitumoral and immune stimulation effect. In this study we replaced AGP with Agaricus bisporus (white button mushroom) and monitored the number of Lactobacillus sp. bacteria in rectal swabs of chickens (aged from 1 day to 38 days) fed with commercial food supplemented with mushrooms. The results of this study showed approximately 14.6% increased Lactobacillus sp. in chickens fed with mushrooms when compared to the control group.
