INTEGRATED APPROACH TO THE DISCHARGE OF TREATED URBAN WASTEWATER INTO KARST AQUIFERS
The paper addresses an integrated approach to the protection of karst aquifers from pollution which might be caused by the discharge of treated urban wastewater in the zones of sanitary protection of the sources of drinking water. In light of the sensitivity of karst aquifers and complexity of their protection, the application of a Driver-Pressures-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) concept is proposed, which affects both potential sources of pollution and mitigation of consequences. It leads to the most acceptable compromise solution of how to with an acceptable level of risk permanently and in the long run protect an aquifer from the pollution generated by settlements within sanitary water source protection zones. This concept was used in assessing the solution for several settlements in central Istria.
