INFLUENCE OF AGING TEMPERATURE AND TIME ON THE HARDNESS OF SOLUTION HEAT TREATED 7449 ALLOY
Modern aircraft are based on the use of high strength lightweight aluminum alloys because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. Aircraft are getting bigger, faster, lighter, safer and more durable due to a continuous development of aluminum materials. Since their chemical composition and microstructure can be modified when heat treated aluminum materials exhibit a wide range of properties. Aluminum alloys can be made as strong as some steels by having their properties modified applying different thermomechanical treatments. When solution heat treated and aged at optimal temperature and for specific time heat treatable alloys of the 7XXX series can be precipitation hardened to high strength. The influence of artificial aging temperature and time on the properties of solution heat treated 7449 aluminium alloys is investigated in this paper. By selecting proper aging parameters high hardness and different combinations of strength and corrosion resistance, the properties highly desirable in aerospace applications, can be achieved.
