Female Characters in Henrik Ibsen's Dramas
The paper brings a comparative analysis of Nora Helmer and Hedda Gabler, the main female characters in Ibsen's dramas A Doll's House and Hedda Gabler. These two characters both represent the prototypical modern women. The New Woman was the term used at the end of the nineteenth century to describe women who were pushing against the limits which society imposed on them. Today she might be called a liberated woman or a feminist. The paper focuses on the most important characteristics of the New Woman, who values self-fulfilment and independence rather than the old-fashioned feminine ideal of self-sacrifice and believes in legal and sexual equality.
