Double Identity in The Picture of Dorian Gray and in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
The purpose of the thesis is to examine the double identity of Dr Jekyll and Dorian Gray. This thesis not also considers the two literary works but also how these identities are presented in their film adaptations. The paper focuses on the double identity developed in the protagonists of these two works. Different theories about the reasons that provoked the separation of the self have been analyzed. The principal reason could be considered the repression that society executed on the behaviour of the individuals. On the other hand, many authors affirmed that homosexuality, strictly forbidden at the period, resulted in writing works that in an implicit manner showed homosexual relationships. This was the reason why Wilde was constrained to change the original of his novel. Likewise Stevenson was accused for the same thing because there were no women in his story.
