Male Society in the Eyes of a Female Narrator in Pride and Prejudice
The paper is concerned with Austen's male characters in her novel Pride and Prejudice and the way she depicts their family background, social and economic status, professions, manners and the notion of gentlemanliness. Austen's men belong to late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century England when society was controlled by a set of conventional rules. It is the time of the Industrial Revolution which created two wealthy classes, ˝the landed gentry˝ and ˝the rich˝. The former, upper class, inherited their property from aristocratic ancestors while the latter, middle class, have acquired their wealth through trade or business. Each of the classes are presented by two leading male characters, Darcy and Bingley.
