Films of Steven Spielberg - The Seventies
In the past four decades of his Hollywood career, Steven Spielberg has become one of the synonyms for modern blockbuster filmmaking. Centered on often spectacular and supernatural motives, his films sometimes polarize professional and fan-based critics on those who see Spielberg purely as a smart entrepreneur who has built his career on mass audience pleasing hits and those who recognize his works less of a simple blockbuster industry and more of auteur works of modern filmmaking. This paper analyzes Spielberg in the context of modern filmmaking. It approaches Spielberg’s cinema from several angles. Firstly, it considers Spielberg as both New Hollywood and blockbuster director, offering insights into these styles and Spielberg’s involvement with them ; secondly, it analyzes Spielberg’s own style and auteur aspects of his works ; and thirdly, it analyzes some of Spielberg’s films in detail, namely Duel, Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. By focusing on those topics, this paper aims to offer understanding of Spielberg’s works, analyze his role as an important director in modern filmmaking and, finally, possibly generate a new insight into his works.
