Properties and durability of benkovac platy stone
Benkovac platy stone is thinly bedded limestone named after small town Benkovac near Zadar in Croatia. Stone was and still is very important building material in Benkovac and surrounding area. It is used as a building material for houses, fences, roof tiles, paving and façade decoration. Not every type of stone is suitable for construction. Carbonate stone varieties are more sensitive to degradation than siliceous varieties. It is important to define durability before stone is built in construction. Durability of stone is resistance to degradation due to physical, chemical and biological influences. For better assessment of durability it is important to define all petrographic, physical and mechanical properties of stone. During the petrographic analyses composition, structural and textural properties all of which are important for durability will be determined by optical microscope. Samples for determination of properties and durability of stone to salt crystallization, frost resistance and to ageing by thermal shock will be chosen by microscopic and macroscopic observation. Physical and mechanical properties and durability of Benkovac platy stone will be determined according to Croatian and European standards.
