Mongols and Illyrians in 19th century Europe

In this presentation will be elaborated the stereotypes among Hungarians and Croats, which began appearing with the national awakening in the late eighteen and early nineteenth century, until the beginning of World War I. Also, briefly will be displayed the development of 'image of the other ' which often seriously crossed the boundaries of what we now call political correctness. The key difference that separated the two peoples was the language, mutually not understandable. So the Hungarians by the Croats were often called wild Mongols, Tatars or more generally - Asians (with a very offensive overtones), thanks to their nonindoeuropean origin. On the other hand, the Croats by the Hungarians were perceived as traitors, foreign (Austrian, Russian) servants or those who live in the clouds, with misguided self-concept as Illyrians. Such conflicting views escalated during the 1848th , when the only time in modern history Hungarians and Croats fought each other, and both emerged from the war as losers. Since the roots of historiography also lie in 19th century, it is given a brief insight into the different views of a mutual Croatian-Hungarian history (in 19th century historiography) which slowly built the foundations of the historical mentality of mutual identification, which survived even until today.
