Social capital and Citizen's political Participation in Latin America
In this article author focus is on the concept of social capital and political participation in Latin America, which is low and contributes to relatively low quality of democracy. Her goal was to verify correlation between interpersonal trust and trust in institutions in Latin America 2010 and 2011. She concluded that the interpersonal trust by country was stable (except in Uruguay and Paraguay), but trust in the institutions by country varied a lot. There was positive correlation between interpersonal trust and trust in the government and political parties just 2010 in a case of Uruguay. The correlation between interpersonal trust and trust in the government in other cases were not significant, even negative. It means that interpersonal trust can’t predict trust in political institutions. She concluded that not just low level of social capital and political participation, but civic culture as well, are obstacles for making democracy work better in Latin America.
