Carpooling and the development of sustainable transport

The transport sector holds a key role in the economic development of a country, but it also produces the largest contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. This paper shall examine the impact of road transport on the environment. A structural analysis of the vehicles in use and the greenhouse gas emissions in the Republic of Croatia was performed based on the collected data. By method of comparison, the paper presents the CO2 reduction measures in the member states of the European Union. The aim of this paper is to highlight the need for undertaking measures conducive to a more intensive use of carpooling, as a more environmentally friendly means of transport.
