Difference of Pigment Behavior in Color Reproduction and Digital Media

Lately we face numerous projects where cultural heritage is to be defined using digital form. Paintings are one of the most interesting objects in that process due to large number of unique pigments that have problem to fit within the gamut of a display. In attempt to overpass those differences it is important to have knowledge about the size of the difference itself. Within this research eleven of pigments today used in contemporary paintings were included. The focus was set to the pigment values that are near or out of the digital gamut possible. To obtain those values we agreed on using spectral data rather than classic few channel one. This was due to wider possibility of data manipulation with spectral data in digital form. After each of the pigments is defined as segment of the visible spectrum, mixture and combinations were obtained, both in physical reproduction and digital form. The usage of different combinations and ratio for simulation of different spectral possibilities resulted in various modifications of the same pigment and its final behavior in digital form (gamut placement). In process of mixing selected pigments different amounts of it were used. With this level diverse properties of final mixture were shown and unique pigment sensibility can be pointed out. The advantage and application of results obtained can be taken as data set in creation of future conservation digital platforms that aim to preserve paintings in, as visually precise, form of selected cultural heritage.
