Teaching Design and Design Skills in Business Educational Institutions in the Republic of Croatia

The subject of this paper is the research undertaken in Croatian business educational institutions (marketing and management business schools or faculty departments). This research presents the range and manners of teaching design for business. It has been induced by the results of the British Design Council research undertaken in 2005. The key objective of this research is to prove that the level of teaching design and design skills in Croatia is low. An effort should be made to change the perception of teaching design in business education to ensure the real understanding of the design process and the influence good design can have on business success. There are different methods of teaching design and design skills ; it can be integrated in other modules, core modules, elective modules or joint programmes which are also the subject of this research. The concept of teaching design and design skills can be defined as: idea creation ; brainstorming and creative techniques ; using design to develop a brand ; the role of design in new product development or design management. The objective is also to find out whether institutions are ready for multi-disciplinary collaboration. The methodology of the research is Fieldwork – interviewing conducted with heads of higher educational institutions as well as the analysis of the research results. This result will be compared with the results of the British Design Council that should point out the trends in Great Britain, a developed European country.
