Native olive cultivars in Croatia and Montenegro

The greatest contribution to the introduction and development of olive growing in the Croatian and Montenegrin came from the Roman Empire. In this area olives are cultivated more than 3000 years. As a result of mostly common historical processes, olive growing practice and cultivars are very similar in southern part of Croatia an in Montenegro. Nevertheless, different ecologic conditions and propagation techniques had an important influence over varietal structure resulting in great cultivar diversity in the area. Different descriptions and denominations of numerous olive varieties could be found in ancient scriptures. The exact number of autochthon olive cultivars in this area still is unknown due to different research methodology and the presence of homonyms and synonyms. Aimed to preserve biodiversity, a project of field in situ identification and collection of autochthon olive gen pool was initiated. Five most important olive cultivars from the area were included in the research and were collected and described. Further joint research and collaboration among two countries is very important and should include other native cultivars and their identification by means of morphological and molecular markers.
