Computational modelling and characterization of lightweight cellular materials
Cellular materials have an attractive combination of physical properties for use in engineering applications. Their micro- and macroscopic properties make them suitable for use in automotive, rail, naval, aerospace and armor industry as heat exchangers, filters, bearings, acoustic dampers, bio-medical implants, blast protectors and especially as elements for impact energy absorption. Characterization of three types of cellular materials is presented in this paper: cellular materials with unidirectional pores, aluminum foams and Advanced Pore Morphology (APM) foam. Characterization of their geometrical and mechanical properties was based on quasi-static and dynamic nonlinear computational simulations and experimental testing. Newly developed methodology for proper 2D and 3D geometrical modeling of irregular porous structure and consequent formation of computational models is presented.
