Radionuclides and selected elements in soil, spruce and fir branches, and honey from Gorski Kotar, Croatia

Radionuclides, as well as other cations, which are either constitutive elements or trace elements of soil, or deposited as a fallout due to global atmospheric pollution, can migrate upwards by plant uptake. Due to this, the research on caesium, potassium, as well as some other trace element content in soil, youngest part of spruce and fir branches, and honey from Gorski Kotar has been started. Activities of 137^Cs and 40^K were determined using gamma-spectrometry method, while total potassium and trace element concentration were measured using XRF method. The results of total potassium, 137^Cs and 40^K, as well as majority of trace elements indicate the relatively high cations uptake and mobility in youngest parts of coniferous trees. That is especially evident for univalent cations: 40^K, 137^Cs, total potassium and rubidium. Concentrations of same cations are significantly higher in predominantly honey-dew honey vs. predominantly meadow or mixed, meadow and honey-dew honey. It seems that honey-dew honey and youngest parts of coniferous trees" branches could be used as a long term indicator of caesium pollution.
