Student projects in higher education: valuable format for active learning in the social sciences
Active learning is an umbrella term for many teaching strategies and techniques that give the student more active role for his/her own learning. Many papers have been published on educational and transformational value of different curricula activities and formats: service learning, community service, volunteer work, project and problem based learning. Different formats of active learning can be very valuable in social sciences – especially in helping professions education. The aim of this paper is to present student projects as a course based and credit bearing activity at Social pedagogy study program (course Social problems) that was introduced few years ago and replaced seminars (group written paper). The main idea is to give students an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to create, conduct and evaluate a project that would make a difference.
