Subsurface Microhardness of High-viscosity Bulk-fill Resin Composites

Objectives: To investigate the influence of light-curing duration on microhardness of high-viscosity bulk-fill resin composites in depths up to 6 mm. Methods: Four bulk-fill materials (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill-TECBF, Ivoclar Vivadent ; x-tra fil-XF, VOCO ; QuixFil-QF, Dentsply DeTrey ; SonicFill-SF, Kerr) and one nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram-TEC, Ivoclar Vivadent) were filled in stainless steel split molds and light-cured for 10, 20 or 30 s with a LED curing unit (Bluephase G2, Ivoclar Vivadent) at 1170 mW/cm2. After storing the specimens for 24 h in the dark at 37°C, Knoop hardness (KHN) was measured at five distances from the light-exposed surface: 0.1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 mm (n = 8). For each specimen, three measurements were performed at each depth. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test (p < 0.05). Results: KHN of TEC significantly decreased with increasing bulk thickness. TECBF and SF showed a significant decrease in KHN at 4 mm in case of both 20 s and 30 s irradiation, and at 2 mm in case of 10 s irradiation. With 30-s irradiation time, QF showed no significant KHN-decrease for depths up to 6 mm, while this was true for XF for depths up to 5 mm. KHN significantly decreased at 4 mm when XF was light-cured for 20 s or less, and when QF was light-cured for 10 s. At 4 mm depth, only QF light-cured for at least 20 s, and XF light-cured for 30 s achieved at least 80% of superficial (0.1 mm) KHN-values. Conclusion: Among the tested bulk-fill materials, only QF and XF achieved acceptable hardening at 4-5 mm depths when using an irradiation time of 30 s (> 1000 mW/cm2).
