100% Renewable Energy Solutions for Regions: the Case of South East Europe
This paper presents methodology and results of analyses conducted for regionally integrated energy systems of the South East Europe (SEE) region with a high share of renewables. In order to investigate how SEE energy system should be designed to achieve high penetration of the intermittent renewable energy sources, the EnergyPLAN model was used. A reference model of the SEE energy system was developed for the year 2008, which was then used to conduct analyses for 50% renewable energy system in the year 2030, as a first step toward 100% renewable energy system in the year 2050. Furthermore, analysis of the SEE energy system in the year 2020 were conducted by taking into account the projections from the National Renewable Energy Action Plans and Energy Strategies of the SEE countries and flexibility of power plants. The results show that 100% renewable energy system is achievable with optimal energy resource mixes, energy savings and different storage technologies.
