Salona: an example of "blood and fanaticism with respect to people who think differently"?
Pre-christian architecture of Salona always remained secondary in comparison to its Christian counterpart. Ejnar Dyggve, the great Danish architect and explorer of Salona, located the centre of public life (the forum) in the old part of Salona, but we know next to nothing of most of the pagan shrines and pagan monuments, apart from the amphitheater and the theater. The reason for this, Dyggve thought, lies in the "bloody fanaticism towards people of different religious beliefs", by which he meant the impact of Christianity and its intolerance towards the traditional cults. Still, do we need to look for a violent end of the pagan Salona?
