Investment Analysis - Chart/Technical Analysis
The purpose of this presentation is to point out the basic knowledge, rules but also more sophisticated methods of technical analysis. While fundamental analysis tries to estimate the intrinsic value of securities, technical analysis studies the effects of supply and demand, that is the price movements themselves and their turnover or volume. With adequate tools, such as three basic types of charts (bar charts, line charts and point-and-figure charts) technical analysis tries to explain relevant movements in securities prices. With more straightforward quantitative methods like moving averages or even econometric models like trend oscillators, relative strength indicators (Levy ; Wilder), monentum and overbought/oversold oscillators technical analysis tries to find profitable buy and sell signals for securities transactions. At the end of the presentation a case study of the Slovenian capital market is elaborated. It was stressed that the secondary capital market in Slovenia is an emerging financial market with high monthly and annual returns, but accompanied with higher risk. In 1992 real returns ranged from 20.98% for government bonds to 103.89% for stocks.
