Notes on growth and flowering of some worm-climate woody-plants in the Botanical garden in Zagreb

In the Botanical garden of the Faculty of Sciences in Zagreb, in 1953, a group of Mediterranean species was established in the open air. Growing, flowering and fructification of in Croatia autochthonous woody species represented in the said group, under conditions of continental climate, was monitored. In winter, the plants were protected by dry leaves and corn stalks. The species resistant to continental climatic conditions, which flower and bear fruits are: Asparagpus acutifolius L., Clematis flammula L., Colutea arborescens L., Coronilla emerus ssp. emeroides (Boiss. & Sprun) Hayek, Erica manipuliflora Salisb., Juniperus oxycedrus L., Lavandula angustifolia Mill., Myrtus communis var. tarentina L., Paliurus spina-christi Mill., Petteria ramentacea (Sieber) K. B. Presl, Phillyrea latifolia L., Phlomis fruticosa L., Pistacia terebinthus L., Quercus coccifera L., Salvia officinalis L., Smilax aspera L., Styrax officinalis L. and Viburnum tinus L. The species which grows well, flowers but bears no fruit is Punica granatum L. The species which grow well but do not flower are: Ephedra fragilis ssp. campylopoda (C. A. Mey.) Aschers. et Graebn., Ephedra major Host, Laurus nobilis L. and Phillyrea angustifolia L. The species whose aboveground parts in severe winters get more or less damaged but plants sprout again are: Ceratonia siliqua L., Lonicera implexa Ait., Quercus ilex L., Pistacia lentiscus L. and Rhamnus alaternus L. The species planted in the Botanical garden but which cannot grow in the open air are: Pinus halepensis Mill. and Rosmarinus officinalis L.
