„We didn't need any political campaign“ – Peculiar development of Croatian Peasant Party (1918-1941)
During the 1920s, Croatian Peasant Party became the strongest political party in Croatia and already during the 1930s, it turned into a national movement. Most of the time, it was an opposition party and hence had to face many problems related to the organization of their own party network and limited possibilities of active political engagement. That resulted in an alternative development of a political party, which had to deal with limitations and problems of the party organization, but on the other hand, successfully initiated activity of non-political organizations and achieved national (and, to an extent, social) homogenization and mobilization.
