Perceptions of an ethical work climate in different faculties of a university: Cross-sectional study at the University of Split, Croatia.
Introduction: Organization’s ethical climate is a shared perception of its employees on morally accepted actions and behaviors within an institution. It reflects organizations’ characteristics and influences employees’ ethical and unethical behavior. Aim: To assess differences in ethical climate between faculties of a single university. Methods: The ethical climate questionnaire (ECQ) was distributed to full-time employees of three different faculties of University of Split, Croatia. Completed questionnaires were analyzed to determine internal reliability of the Croatian version of the scale, and the type of climate employees perceive. Correlations of climate types with employees’ age and years of service were determined. Results: In total 278 employees (139 male and 135 female), aged 20 to 68 (median of 41) returned the completed questionnaires. Cronbach’s alpha of the scale was 0.891, showing good internal consistency. All three faculties differed in their perceptions of climate types, with employees of School of Medicine perceiving predominately Law and Ethical Code climate type ; employees of Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture the Efficiency type, and employees of Faculty of Philosophy the Self-interest type (P=0.029 ; P=0.009 ; P=0.048, respectively ; Kruskal-Wallis test and post hoc analysis with Mann-Whitney U test). Years of service were found to be positively correlated with the items of Self-interest and Service climate types. Discussion: Faculties’ climate types reflected the key features of professions faculties educate for. Observed increase in Self-interest and Service climate type items with years of service most likely reflects involvement and identification of employees with their faculty.
