Matrix metalloproteinase-9 in the urine of patients with colorectal cancer-a pilot study

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) seem to have a crucial role in tumor cell invasion and metastasis. They represent a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases, with a possibility to degrading all the molecular components of extracellular matrix. Colorectal cancer is the second most common malignant disease in developed countries, with 1 million new cases and 500 000 deaths worldwide every year. New possibilities for better monitoring the disease are very important. We verified the activity of MMPs in the urine of patients with diagnosed colorectal cancer in different stages of disease. The method of enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) was used to determine enzyme expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in the urine of 25 patients with colorectal cancer. Results: Our results showed that the patients with colorectal cancer have significant augmentation of MMP-9 in urine in comparison with healthy subjects. This is the beginning of investigation and for now we did not find any correlation to type, stage or grade. Conclusion: Our results showed a large increase in the enzyme MMP-9 in the urine of patients with colorectal cancer, but we need to continue our investigation to make a conclusion is the activity of MMP-9 in urine a useful biomarker for monitoring the colorectal cancer.
